Radio
: A “beam” in Latin was a "radius," and in 1896 when Marconi discovered a way to send coded signals wirelessly, on an invisible “beam,” the process came to be called "radiotelegraphy." Later, they transmitted when sounds such as it were called "radiotelephony" (literally, “far away voice carried on a beam”). In 1907, the term was shortened to just "radio." Another term, "wireless telephony," or simply "wireless," was popular until World War II, when "radio" won out due to the military’s preference for that word.
