 In World War II, the largest conventional bombs were said to be so powerful that one alone could level a whole city block. Thus they were commonly called “blockbusters” (the RAF code name for them was “cookies”). Ten years later, the term "blockbuster" was being used to refer to anything that makes a considerable impact.
