Abraham was around 75 when he left his home and family for God. During that time of wandering he endured times of famine, lots of worry and war.
Sarah must have felt worthless to him because in that culture she had failed to give Abraham a son which was the most important thing a wife could do for her husband. Why then did God wait to give them a son? Because after the hardships they had faced for 25 years after leaving his home God could count on Abraham to teach his children in the ways of the Lord. Abraham's family was key and for the promises of God to happen it would take a great amount of patience and faith for a long time to come, not that God is slow to act, but because God had an enormous and far reaching plan.
