Really it is not a surprise that the fish were counted. This was a large haul of large fish. Large fish were kept while smaller ones were thrown back into the water. Someone may have said can you believe it? I wonder how many there are and counted them or they may have been counted so the fishermen could divide them up? John remembered the exact number of fish just as he remembered Malchus whose ear Peter cut off in (John:18:10-11). John had a good memory to remember names and numbers because Malchus is mentioned nowhere else.
All we know is 153 stands for the number of fish they caught. People should be careful not to invent meanings to things in The Bible.
